Taking Care of You

As nurturing moms, we concern ourselves with the health of our husbands and children, but often neglect our own health until it's too late!  Serious illnesses can develop from on-going stress.  Sometimes these illnesses can be so debilitating that we're unable to continue homeschooling, the very thing we're stressing over!

"De-stressing" means to let go of stress, and then feel rejuvenated by activities which "restore the soul".   This is extremely important when you can't get away from your job! Take a block of time each day to connect with God, yourself, review your Life Priorities, and DO SOMETHING that makes you feel healthy and calm.

We believe it's our responsibility to take care of the family, but it's ALSO our responsibility to take care of ourselves!  THEN, we're able to take care of others without being physically, mentally and emotionally depleted.

Exercise and a healthy diet are important for everyone.  Eating organically (as much as possible) not only reduces toxins but they say it's 25% more nutritious than its counterpart on the shelf. Growing your own garden, buying produce from a local farm, and living a simpler life can all be a part of homeschooling.

When given the opportunity to have the children cared for, we often spend it CLEANING HOUSE and doing LAUNDRY...right?!  Although it's necessary to keep up with those things, be sure to schedule in time to relax (alone), or it won't happen.

Whatever is rejuvenating for you...a hot bath with candles, a short nap, exercise video, walking, time to read, or a chance to get out with girlfriends, it's as important as anything else you do in your day.  Don't think of it as  being lazy, because it's actively taking care of the "the caregiver".  If you're not there to do it, who will?

Even after years of experience, we have days of feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.  If not supported, we can feel like giving up!

Women need each other, and homeschooling moms need other homeschooling moms who understand the unique challenges.  Take time to care for your friends, and be willing to accept their help in your time of need.  Having a fresh perspective can be so refreshing!

Wash away your cares!

If talking with friends, or taking a few hours for yourself doesn't do it, consider taking a break for a few days or a week, while giving the children library books/videos and other activities to occupy their time.  Your job  is to relax and do the things that make you feel good!

Other jobs give two days off per week, along with holidays and vacations.  Homeschooling does not!  Moms are on-duty twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week!  (When we're not "in school", we're teaching life skills, running to sports, dance or music lessons while playing referee to sibling squabbles!)

Don't minimize the importance of EVERYTHING you do!

Make the choice to Be Happy!

If you follow these suggestions, homeschooling will continue to be a joy.  If you don't, it's only a matter of time until you burn out!

Make your home a peaceful, happy place by taking care of your mental health.  Screaming, yelling and frustration destroys personal happiness along with marriage and family relationships.

It's worth the effort to "Find Happiness Each Day".

As you take care of your health, your children will learn by example. It will be worth every minute, and your life will be so much more rewarding and enjoyable!

Enjoy Your Life....It's a GIFT!
